About Pack 39

WHO IS PACK 39?

Pack 39 in Chapel Hill, NC is a Cub Scout pack for youth in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We are chartered by Recycling for Youth, and meeting at the University United Methodist Church and a part of the Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Our Pack meets monthly at University United Methodist Church (150 E. Franklin St.).  In addition to Pack meetings (all Scouts), Scouts meet once a month in their smaller Dens.

We also organize four family camping outings each year (two in the Fall and two in the Spring) and gather for other special events like the annual Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold banquet, and several community service projects.

We have between 50-60 active Scout members in our Pack and a great team of trained volunteer leaders. Many of our Cub Scouts go on to join Scout Troop 39 after they earn their "Arrow of Light" in their final year of Cub Scouts.

WHY JOIN PACK 39?

Cub Scouting is for youth in Kindergarten through the 5th grade.  Pack 39 accepts both boys and girls as Cub Scouts.

Cub Scouts is a lot of fun. Scouts get to do lots of cool stuff.  We've been hiking and camping; we've visited zoos, aquariums, and fire stations;we've tested our athletic skills, learned First Aid, gone fishing, told jokes around the campfire, conducted science experiments, learned how to whittle, and raced Pinewood Derby race cars.  We've also performed community service projects and marched in parades.

What do we do?

Each year is filled with a wide-range of age-appropriate activities aimed at teaching values, leadership skills, and outdoors skills. To keep track of it all, Pack 39 maintains an active Google calendar for our Pack-wide events.

In all of our activities, we emphasize the values embodied by the Scout Oath: "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

What is a Pack? a Den?

A "pack" is a large group of Cub Scouts made up of several smaller "dens". A den is a group of between 4-12 Scouts who are typically in the same school grade and working on the same corresponding rank.

Dens meet separately to work on requirements specific to their rank and appropriate to their age.  All dens come together for pack meetings, camping trips, community service activities, and other events.

A Pack has a Cubmaster and each Den has a Den Leader. These are trained, volunteer leaders who run the Pack's and Dens' activities. In addition, each Pack has a Committee that oversees its organization and provides support to the Cub Master and Den Leaders.

What is the parent's role?

Cub Scouting, especially at the early stages, is all about parental / familial participation.  At least one parent is expected to attend all Pack meetings and help guide his/her Scout through the process, acting as the Scout's "Akela." As the Scouts get older and progress up the ranks, Scouts become more independent and are able to take on more responsibility for completing their requirements.  Families are welcome and encouraged to participate in all of our events.

What is the time commitment?

In Pack 39, all Scouts and parents attend a monthly pack meeting (typically on a Tuesday evening, 6:30-7:30pm). Scouts should also expect to meet with their den at least once/month to work on den-specific activities. Each den sets their own day/time for this monthly meeting, but den meetings are typically held at the same time on Sundays at Wilson Park in Carrboro. Beyond these two regular meetings, there are special events throughout the year like the Pinewood Derby, community service projects, and camping trips.

Can't wait! How do I join?

Joining Cub Scouts is easy! Just follow the link here to our "Joining Pack 39" page for new scouts. There is a simple, one-page application form and there are annual dues, paid in August of each year. These dues include a Pack 39 t-shirt and cover expenses for many of our activities and camping outings.  Occasionally, some of our special outings will require an additional payment by participating family members.  Families also need to purchase a Scout uniform. Though not required, we also encourage families to purchase a Cub Scout handbook for their child's corresponding rank.

We are building something special.

The Cub Scout motto is easy to remember:  "Do your best!"  It's all about camping, service, fun with friends -- and more.  It's the adventure of a lifetime. Cub Scouts is a great way for youth to become thoughtful citizens and future leaders.

Give your child a valuable gift by encouraging him or her to join Cub Scouting today. The time you invest today will make a difference in the person your child becomes tomorrow.
